Preface

"Visions of Flora" is an unfolding ballad through realms of enchantment, an invitation to marvel and to experience stillness in a world of constant motion.

Throughout this book, you will be taken on a journey through pictures: some reminiscent of classical paintings, at times elegantly portrayed in the intimacy of a French boudoir. Others immersed in the world of undines, faes and nature, set in dreamlike scenes out of a fairy tale. All images are bathed in gentle, magical light, just like visions blossoming in the artist's imagination.

Vivienne Mok appreciates that which withstands the test of time, and there certainly is a classic quality to her work. Yet, she captures her subjects, both women and men, navigating delicately between past and present, blending the ancient with a touch of the modern. In her search to express a universal essence, abundance and sensuality are found to gently dance with simplicity and purity.

The process of putting this book together was a journey of introspection in and of itself, retracing her work from over 15 years ago when she started the art of photography. It can be viewed as a brief summary of all these years of work, a devoted path of developing and perfecting her craft.

Like a flower unfolding, “Visions of Flora” reflects part of a personal and artistic evolution.

A few words from the author:

“Vision of Flora” is the result of two years of continuous work and preparation, and ultimately, a condensed summary of 15 years of photography. I've worked quietly but relentlessly on this project: I walked down memory lane and browsed through all of my archives since I started photography, went through the process of never-ending selection with a critical eye and the challenge of letting go of many images, created new images specifically for this book (some which will not be found anywhere else!), reworked some of my older images, gone through countless layout trials and many late nights of fine-tuning… Its creation process has certainly been a long, but fruitful journey of introspection and evolution.

This book is truly a labour of love: from content curation to layout order and conception, I've paid close attention to every detail to bring you the most personal book possible.

I sincerely hope that you will enjoy browsing through it at your own pace, and that it will take you on a journey through and out of time.

Vivienne.
